I heard the researcher on NPR a few years ago and the idea that we are 90% microbes and 10% human cells blew me away. Now they have published more studies\u00a0and all the implications are coming out: antibiotics, animals fed antibiotics, too-clean lifestyles, triclosan in everything (hand soap and now in the water systems) and the implications in so many physical and mental health conditions. A growing body of evidence indicates that the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2007\/02\/11\/AR2007021100932.html\">microbial ecosystems<\/a> that have long populated our guts, mouths, noses and every other nook and cranny play crucial roles in keeping us healthy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: 10px; line-height: 10px;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 22px; margin-left: 0px; font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.5em; font-family: Georgia, serif; padding: 0px;\">Moreover, researchers are becoming more convinced that modern\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/gordonlab.wustl.edu\/\"><\/a>trends \u2014 diet, antibiotics, obsession with cleanliness, Caesarean delivery of babies \u2014 are disrupting this delicate balance, contributing to some of the most perplexing ailments, including asthma, allergies, obesity, diabetes, autoimmune diseases, cancer and perhaps even autism.<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 22px; margin-left: 0px; font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.5em; font-family: Georgia, serif; padding: 0px;\">\u201cIn terms of potential for human health, I would place it with stem cells as one of the two most promising areas of research at the moment,\u201d said\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/chem.colorado.edu\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=263:rob-knight&amp;catid=41:faculty&amp;Itemid=93\">Rob Knight<\/a> of the University of Colorado. \u201cWe\u2019re seeing an unprecedented rate of discovery.
