The latest expert panel on Polycystic Ovarian Sydnrome said recently that “PCOS is a major public health issue for women”. The panel went on to explain that PCOS is not one condition 1. It consists of different types or phenotypes, which is why it is so confusing to treat. For some women, PCOS is caused by insulin resistance. For some women, it appears to be genetic or caused by prenatal hormone exposure.

An expert panel has recently recommended a name change for the condition because the appearance of polycystic ovaries alone is not diagnostic. Many normal women can display polycystic ovaries at one time or another, and the appearance of ovaries on ultrasound can change utterly from month to month. To be properly diagnosed with PCOS, a woman must have at least 2 of the following 3 criteria: 1 testosterone excess, 2 abnormal ovulation patterns, and 3 polycystic ovaries on ultrasound.Do not be too quick to accept a diagnosis.
